Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.

I just completed my MA in TESOL, and I'm about to tackle my other MA (East Asian Studies), which had been on hold. I'm studying Japanese, with the goal of fluency, but also trying to prevent my current low level of Mandarin from rusting. Having had a lot of well-intentioned but mostly untrained language teachers, I really want to be a good English teacher. That's why I enrolled in the MA program after doing the certification: teaching a language isn't easy, even your native language. Knowing it and teaching it are two totally different things!

Anyway, pardon the rant. What else ... I have a wide variety of academic and personal interests, and they won't all fit in my LJ interests list. I like to travel when I can. I've visited Japan, Taiwan, the PRC (and Tibet), Nepal, and Thailand so far. I especially want to revisit Taiwan and Japan (and maybe live there a while). I've lived in Missouri, Alabama, North Carolina, Kansas, Arkansas (where I lived the longest), and Taiwan. Now I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband (assaultdoor), and I'd love to stay here long term. Other "real life" friends of mine of note on LJ include kyspaz, my friend since sixth grade; pts, a kindred spirit; _aurelius, whom I've known since junior high; unkyrich, a local friend and GM; jenniferward and siderealengine, our former roommates; and applechailatte, a MATESOL classmate and friend.

Communities/journals of mine:
tesol_forum: for serious teachers/aspiring teachers of English to speakers of other languages
gears_and_steam: for steampunk/industrial fantasy-related image posts and conversation
buildyourwings: for aspiring entrepreneurs and other alternatives to conventional corporate slavery
